The Games Education Legacy
Submitted on: Jul 16, 2008
The Organisers of the 2011 Games are looking to leave an Educational Legacy of the Games. With this in mind members of the Committee have been visiting all the Secondary Schools on the Island speaking to those students who will be in the 6th Forms in 2011. The intention was to get the students interested in either competing for the Island in the Games or assisting as Volunteers. During the Assemblies competitions were held and one of these was sponsored by Cable and Wireless. In addition to answering questions the students had to propose a suitable motto for the Games.
On Tuesday at the NSC the three lucky winners received from Julie Heselton the Marketing Manager of Cable and Wireless a new Phone, and MP3 Player and a Blue Band Head Set. The winners were Brandon Garrett ( whose motto was “One Island-its ace, be the best-It’s the place”, Katie Watson (“Play it, Live it, Love it”) and Ciara Sullivan and Olivia Rawlinson (“United by Nations, United by Dreams-Be PART OF IT”)
The mottos will be used in the promotion of the Games.
Work with schools will now concentrate on the Primary Schools on the Island with a ‘Have A GO Launch Day’ on the 22nd July at the NSC. 6 children from each Primary School will attend to witness a draw by which each school will adopt one of the competing nations from the Commonwealth. The intention is that in the next 3 years the schools will learn about their nation, communicate with the people from that country and have the opportunity to meet these people in 2011. After the draw those pupils attending will have an opportunity to try out the 7 sports which will feature in the 2011 Games.
